Movie Scene Map

A world map of real filming locations. 8,578 places, 24,120 films and television series, 207 countries. Search a title to see where it was shot, or search a place to see what was filmed there.

Where films and television series were actually shot

Most film location lists are text. This one is a map, because where a scene was shot is a question about geography. Every dot is a real place with real coordinates, taken from an open database rather than guessed, and every dot links to the productions filmed there and back out to the source record.

The map answers two questions. The first is the one people type into search engines most often: where was a given film shot. Pick a title and its locations light up together, so you can see at a glance whether a production stayed in one city or crossed four countries. The second question runs the other way. Click any place and you get the list of films and series shot there, which is how a castle in Northumberland or a street corner in Chicago turns out to have a filmography of its own.

Browse by kind of place

Filming locations are not all alike. A soundstage, a mountain range and a high street get used in completely different ways, so the map colours them differently and each kind has its own page.

Movie locations by country

Shooting is concentrated in a handful of countries and then scattered thinly across the rest of the world. These are the countries with the most recorded filming locations.

The most filmed places

A small number of places turn up again and again. These are the locations with the longest list of productions.

Films and series to start with

Each of these has several recorded locations, which makes the shape of the shoot easy to read on the map.

How this map is built

Location records come from Wikidata, which stores a "filming location" link between a production and a place, and coordinates on the place itself. We keep only entries where the place has real coordinates. Where a record names a country rather than a spot, the entry is kept but marked, and drawn faded, so a vague record never passes as a precise one.

Photographs come from Wikimedia Commons. We link the image rather than copying it, and store the author and licence alongside, so the credit always travels with the picture. Nothing on this site is a film still or a poster; the photographs show the real places as they are.

Frequently asked questions

What is Movie Locations Map?

A free map of real filming locations. Search a film or a television series and the map shows you every place it was shot; search a place and it shows you what was filmed there. There is no account and no sign-up.

How many filming locations are on the map?

8,578 places across 207 countries, linked to 24,120 films and television series. 8,135 of those places have an exact spot; 443 are recorded only at country or region level.

Where does the data come from?

Locations and coordinates come from Wikidata, a free knowledge base released under CC0. Photographs come from Wikimedia Commons and each one is credited to its author with its licence. Map tiles come from OpenFreeMap using OpenStreetMap data.

Why is a film I know missing?

A title only appears if someone has recorded a filming location for it on Wikidata, and only if that location has coordinates. Plenty of well-known films have no recorded location yet. The map grows as Wikidata grows.

What does "country level only" mean?

Some records say a production was shot in, say, Canada, without naming a spot. Those are kept but marked, and their dots are drawn faded so you can tell them apart from a precise location.

Can I visit these places?

Many are public: streets, parks, castles and towns. Others are private property, working studios or closed sets. Always check locally before travelling, and respect private land.

Is Movie Locations Map free?

Yes. The whole map and every page is free to use, with no account and no paywall.

How do I report a mistake?

Most mistakes come from the source data. The most lasting fix is to correct the record on Wikidata, which flows through to this map on the next rebuild. You can also contact us.
